Women from Mururu sector in Rusizi District planted more than 700 trees as part of activities to mark the just concluded national tree-planting drive.
Over 400 women took part in the activity and vowed to protect the freshly planted trees.
"As mothers of the nation, we should know better how trees are important to us and our families," said Marie Jean Mukantera, the co-coordinator for the National Council for Women, in Rusizi district.
"Women have always been cited in deforestation because it's us who need firewood, charcoal and other items. The answer to deforestation is definitely planting another tree for every tree cut," Mukantera advised.
During the occasion, several women stated they had come to appreciate the importance of trees.
"I always thought of trees as mere decoration for roads and compounds, but I now know that trees are very useful for the air we breathe as well as wind breaking," Florance Uwamariya said.
