THE United States embassy has launched a mentoring programme for girls in high schools. The programme is aimed at empowering girls to become economically independent and socially responsible.  The embassy has injected $100,000 (about sh230m) into the project where trainees from selected schools would receive skills about, entrepreneurship, leadership and other life-skills.

Over the weekend for two hours, mentors will impart communication, financial literacy, goal setting, critical thinking and self-esteem.

Century Enteprenuer Development Agency (CEDA) International will execute the programme, according to the US Ambassador, Jerry Lanier.

At the launch of the programme, Lanier explained that the programme dubbed “Rising Stars” would create a new generation of women leaders. The first trainees were drawn from seven schools.

The schools are Nabisunsa Girls, Trinity College Nabbingo, Mbogo High, Gayaza High, Aboke Girls, Tororo Girls and Bweranyangi Girls’ school.

Rehmah Kasule, the chief executive officer of CEDA said the programme would bridge the gap between the theoretical education curriculum and the life needs for the Ugandan girls.
