This manual supports facilitators to plan, start, facilitate and evaluate participatory training workshops with NGOs and CBOs.
The primary audience for this manual is facilitators who provide training to NGOs and CBOs in southern Africa. This includes facilitators from SAT's partner organisations in the region in particular. The users of this manual do not have to be experts in participatory training. However, it will be helpful if they have already attended – or, preferably, facilitated – a few training activities where participatory methods have been used. It is also important that facilitators bring their own creativity and common sense to using this manual. For example, if an activity does not suit your local culture, then please adapt it. Or, if you know of a more exciting method, then please use it!

This manual is divided into four Parts:
Part 1: Reviewing methods for facilitating a participatory workshop supports facilitators to review how people
learn, how groups work and what methods make good participatory facilitation.
Part 2: Planning and preparing for a participatory workshop supports facilitators to plan and prepare for a
participatory training workshop, including developing objectives and a schedule.
Part 3: Starting a participatory workshop supports facilitators to start a participatory training workshop, including
assessing participants' existing knowledge, breaking the ice and setting ground rules.
Part 4: Evaluating a participatory workshopsupports facilitators to assess a participatory training workshop, as it
goes along and at its conclusion.
