The United Nations Entity for Gender Equity and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has re-affirmed its commitment to the economic empowerment of rural women in Nigeria.
The UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr. Grace Ongile, stated this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UN Women and Novo Health Africa, a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) in Abuja.
Dr. Ongile said the purpose of the MoU was to provide a framework of cooperation and facilitate collaboration between the two organiaations, in areas of common interest.
She emphasised the need to enable women build and strengthen their potentials in order to contribute significantly to the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria.
According to her,’’ these outcomes can only be achieved with education, economic empowerment and access to health care services. It is in recognition of this, in addition to the fact that partnership yields better results that UN Women and Novo Health Africa are signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Managing Director/CEO, Novo Health Africa, Dr. Dorothy Jeff-Nnamani, said the company is poised to strengthening the health system for social and economic development by developing and providing sustainable health programmes and services that would be beneficial to the rural women.
She expressed hope that the partnership with UN Women would change the status and livelihood of rural women in Nigeria.
