Medical experts have raised alarm over increasing cases of a hazardous health condition known as Endometriosis in women which causes unbearable pain during the menstrual cycle of women but is wrongly diagnosed by most doctors.

The condition which affects one in 10 women, unfortunately, is mistaken for other forms of infection or fibroids, hence making treatment options very difficult and painful for the patient.

Speaking during the Million Woman March for Endometriosis, Medical Director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Abuja, Dr Abayomi Ajayi, said the wrong diagnosis of endometriosis occurs worldwide. Even in developed counties it takes six to 10 years to get the right diagnosis.

"Diagnosing it is very difficult as it is made by a surgical procedure known as laparoscopy," he said, adding that its a condition those affected have to manage throughout life.

Ajayi opined that most hospitals do not have the right diagnostic equipment for the condition neither do they possess the expertise to handle the women who have it it.A renowned reproductive health expert, Professor Oladipo Ladipo, describedendometriosis as one of the most challenging gynaecological problems he has encountered in over 35 years of clinical experience.

He tasked government to invest in public education and advocacy to pharmaceutical companies who in turn will come up drugs to reduce the pain.
At the forum, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, called for a yearly national consultative forum to enable health experts brainstorm on challenges in the sector.

"We have a lot of challenges at the moment. Even basic malaria, we are finding it difficult to manage. Nobody seems to be talking about sickle cell disease and we have the largest burden in the world. It's the same thing with endometriosis."
