An NGO in Gombe, 'the Community Upliftment Initiative' has empowered 20 women groups in various skills acquisition schemes.

The Executive Director, Mrs Salomi Mailusa made this known in Gombe on Wenesday.

Mailusa who was a former Director of Women Affairs in the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, said the women groups were trained in tailoring, soap making, catering services and hair dressing.

"You know women are mothers and if you empower one woman, it is as if you empower the whole nation because she will make an impact in the life of others, particularly children and youths, " she said.

She said, besides the empowerment of the 20 women groups, the organization also supported 10 orphans with educational materials.

On the funding of the activities of the NGO, Mailusa said she was getting donations from few individuals and also using her personal funds.

She called on donor agencies to support the NGO to enable it to redouble its efforts to cater for the welfare of women and children in the society.
