A report compiled by Turkish lawmakers has identified Rwanda as having one of the best constitutions in regard to gender equality worldwide.

In Africa, Rwanda is ranked alongside South Africa while elsewhere; countries such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden lead the way in eliminating gender inequality.

"In Rwanda, women in parliament are represented in huge numbers and the constitution strictly prohibits gender-based discrimination," the report reads in part.

It stipulates that even though the majority of Rwandan women still work in subsistence farming, they play a more important role in the formal sector since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Women constitute 56 per cent of the Chamber of Deputies.

According to Chief Gender Monitor, Oda Gasinzigwa, plans are under way to strengthen gender equality even further.

"Apart from creating a difference by promoting women's rights, the aspect of equality, non discrimination and equal participation are considered as priority," she said.

Gasinzigwa noted that her office is constantly monitoring the ongoing land registration process so as to further streamline the process of property ownership and heritage.
