Mothers in Bweyogerere have reason to smile, with the launch of a new mother to child health ward, set to replace the single room unit they had.
With support from Alliance of International Doctors (AID) from Turkey, the Uganda Muslim Youth Assembly (UMYA), set up the new facility that is equipped with the $24,000 (Shs 61m) worth of equipment, which includes 10 beds for adults, 10 beds for children, three maternity beds, dispensing water fridges and its components, among others.
UMYA Vice Chairperson Imam Kasozi said they had solicited for funds to complete the construction of the maternity ward and equipping it. The new ward, located in Kazinga zone in Bweyogerere, followed public outcry that the old health centre was lacking in services.
"We did not have enough funds for the health centre by the time we were approached, but for three months, we raised Shs 61m, which can work as a start-up for the health centre," said Kibra Nur Anyar of AID, at the handover ceremony on Monday.
Commissioning the new ward, Prince Kassim Nakibinge applauded AID for the donation and UMYA for their initiative.
"Health facilities in the country are wanting; when it comes to mothers the situation is alarming. The donation made will provide life to all mothers and their babies," he said. Nakibinge is fondly regarded as the "grandfather of the Muslim community in Uganda.
He later cautioned the health workers to be very professional when handling their patients. Imam Kasozi revealed that they plan to expand into a bigger hospital on the remaining 30 acres of land.
