The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) joins millions across the globe in the united fight against HIV and Aids on this year's World Aids Day.
As we remember those who lost their lives as a result of illnesses related to this pandemic, we also show our continuous support to those affected and infected by the virus.
According to figures released by Statistics South Africa in May 2013, the estimated overall HIV prevalence rate was approximately 10%. The total number of people living with HIV was estimated at approximately 5, 26 million. For adults aged 15 - 49 years, an estimated 15, 9% of the population is HIV positive. Regardless of the figures, POPCRU believes that the government of the day has worked hard to make sure that those infected are placed on Anti-Retroviral treatment. The organisation however appeals with those who are not infected by the virus to continue to do everything in their power to protect themselves.
As World Aids Day coincides with the ongoing 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign we urge the masses to stop the stigmatisation against people living with the disease and call an end to their abuse.
Lest we forget that employers also play a critical role in shaping the society, they should also take up action by amending their policies in such a manner that they do not discriminate against any individual.
POPCRU, a COSATU affiliate in good standing would also like to take this opportunity wish the federation a happy 29th birthday. For almost 30 years the federations has championed worker unity, putting their interest first and protecting their rights. The union is content that its beloved mother-body will grow even stronger and live to see another 29 years despite its current challenges. We are also confident that it will remain the driving force for better working conditions for the South African working class.
