Abeline Razanamamy is an elderly widow living in central Madagascar. She is determined not to rely on anybody else for her survival.

She’s maintained her independence by growing rice… a lot of rice.

She applies a technique called the System for Rice Intensification, or SRI, which has more than doubled her yield. Developed in Madagascar in the 1980s, SRI is now being used by about 5 million farmers across the world.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is running training programmes to teach the farmers the technique and to encourage them to use it.

IFAD's Declan McCormack has more.
