CAPE TOWN - Gender equality is far from being achieved in the workplace -- women are still not remunerated on par with their male colleagues.

The World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report reveals that South African women earn far less than men doing the same jobs, compared with other nations.

In fact, it reports a staggering 33% difference in pay between men and women employed in South Africa for the same task.

Generally, worldwide, men earn around 13% more than women.

The Commission for Gender Equality decries this stereotypical discrimination as 'blatant sexism.'

It wants to see the country's laws changed to enforce equal pay.

Currently, South Africa doesn’t have strong legislation enforcing companies to remunerate women the same as they do men.

As such, the Equity Commission is hard focussed on its proposals to amend the country's laws, in a bid to close the gender wage gap.
