Women in Libya, like their counterparts in Arab nations that witnessed uprisings, have been discovering the impact of the Arab Spring.

Whether they were at the frontline or at home, Libyan women have played a significant role in the battle to oust former leader Muammer Qaddafi.

Soon after they were given an unprecedented opportunity to assert their rights.

Ferial Eddali, chief editor of a recently established newspaper, said that women are now at the forefront of many institutions. They have spearheaded causes like the search for the missing and the rehabilitatation of casualties of the war.

Libya’s interim government has employed a few women in various positions including in theministries of health and social affairs.

Libyan women are building their strength by generating awareness through various meetings on social, political and financial issues as they look forward to building a better future after eight months of strife.

However, there are concerns that Islamist groups who dominate the political dialogue may threaten women's liberties or stifle their rights. Two other North African nations, Tunisia and Egypt, have also seen the rise of Islamists iwhose ideologies are likely to shape their respective governments.
