Human rights organizations in Mauritania have condemned the ''fatwa'' issued against one of their members, Aminetou Mint Moctar.

The organizations, under the aegis of the National Human Rights Organizations Forum, issued the condemnation in a statement on Sunday.

The ''fatwa'' against Moctar, who chairs the Association of women family chiefs, was issued by a group known as the ''friends of Prophet Mohamed''.

The threat, issued through the social media by one Yehdhi Ould Dahi, calls for the killing and gouging of the eyes of Moctar, after she spoke to the media about the general situation of human rights in Mauritania, and the particular case of Mohamed Ould M’kheitir.

M'kheitir has been in detention since December after he was arrested for apostasy, following an alleged attack perpetrated against Prophet Mohamed.

The forum said the fatwa ''constitutes a serious threat against the civil liberties guaranteed by the constitution'' and said it would hold the Mauritanian government responsible for whatever happens to the rights activist.
