VICTIMS of rape have been urged to quickly report to medical institutions for treatment to prevent them from contracting HIV, pregnancy and other sexually transmitted diseases.

In an interview at the just ended Harare Agriculture Show, Adult Rape Clinic outreach officer, Mrs Phephisiwe Muranda, said the clinic was established after realising deficiencies in the care of survivors of sexual assault and rape in the country.
She said the clinic was open to both men and women.
"We are urging survivors of rape to quickly present themselves to our clinic so that they get assistance. All our services are free," she said.
The clinic is located at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital at Parirenyatwa Hospital Complex and is meant to offer quick access to treatment and lessen stigmatisation of victims of rape.
It was established following an increase in the number of rape cases in Harare and surrounding areas.
"Our clinic caters for all people young and old who are survivors of rape. The clinic offers free emergency contraceptive pills for the prevention of pregnancy, psychological support and counselling to survivors and post exposure prophylaxis(PEP).
"The clinic also helps in collection of forensic evidence that is critical in the arrest of rapists.
"Apart from providing holistic care, treatment and support to rape survivors, the ARC provides continuous learning for the medical profession and other stakeholders in management of rape response," Mrs Muranda added.
