A group of soldiers from the national army in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC have been identified as possible culprits behind a rape and looting spree that took place on New Year's Day in the eastern town of Fizi in South Kivu province.

In recent years, the eastern part of the DRC has been the focus of a number of ongoing conflicts. Law and order in many areas is breaking down and rape is now commonplace. The soldiers have not been arrested, but their movements have been restricted. It's still not clear exactly what is going to happen to them. But the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Margot Wallström is calling on swift action against the perpetrators in this case.
