Zimbabwean police have disrupted a Valentine’s Day march aimed at promoting peace and love between foes in the troubled southern African nation.

Marchers at Harare’s central square fled scores of baton-wielding police Tuesday, scattering thousands of fliers in the streets. Witnesses saw no marchers arrested. Police at the scene said the demonstration by about 200 members of the militant Women of Zimbabwe Arise organization was illegal under sweeping security laws that require police clearance.

The fliers called for an end to violence and renewed efforts for forgiveness and reconciliation after years of political unrest. The women’s group campaigns for family rights and more action to improve crippled public utilities and stem official corruption and price increases.
