The head of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, Tuesday in New York, highlighted the relevance of inclusion of gender in the process of development, peace and security.

 

The official was speaking at the opening of the 55th Annual Session of the UN Commission on Women Status going until March 4.

According to the diplomat, concerned analysts are starting to believe more and more that gender equality plays a relevant role in countries’ economic and social development, peace and democracy.

Speaking about UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, who is also the agency’s executive director, said the organs is a new entity created to raise the profile of gender and women's issues.

She described the agency as a forum where each country will is in a position to share its innovations and the best practices and experiences.

According to her, UN Women will help see whether or not policies and reforms being adopted by governments are actually contributing to improve women’s living.

She also spoke of the need for inclusion of gender in policies and programmes of sustainable development.

Mentioning the rural women, the official said they can play a relevant role in the pursuit of the millennium goals.

The diplomat also mentioned the need for honest reports on the challenges facing the great nations and how to work together at national, regional and global levels towards established goals.

The meeting opening ceremony took place on the premises of the UN Headquarters, attended by representatives from more than 180 member countries.

The ceremony recorded addresses and exchanges of experience among the various groups of countries from geopolitical and geostrategic regions like the CPLP, Rio Group, European Union and African Union.

The head of the Angolan delegation will address the event on Thursday when she is expected to make a presentation on the progress scored in the country, in response to recommendations from previous meetings.
